Abstract:
As a foundational source of Chinese popular literature, Dunhuang bianwen has attracted considerable scholarly attention since its discovery. To date, three sinologists — Arthur Waley, Eugene Eoyang, and Victor H. Mair — have each translated selected texts into English. While their translation practice has generated some research interest both in China and abroad, the existing body of scholarship remains unsystematic and limited in both depth and breadth. This article attempts to provide a comprehensive review and synthesis of the English translation practice of Dunhuang bianwen and the related translation research.
